Overview
Pergamos was a major city in western Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) with a significant Christian presence in the first century. The church there faced unique pressure living in a pagan cultural center devoted to idolatry and emperor worship. Despite this challenging context, they maintained their faith in Christ, yet they had begun to compromise on essential doctrinal and moral standards.
Key Scriptures
"To the angel of the church in Pergamos write: 'The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword. I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells'" (Revelation 2:12-13, ESV).
"But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality" (Revelation 2:14, ESV).
Application
Believers today must guard against gradual doctrinal compromise and cultural pressure that subtly undermines biblical conviction.
