Overview
The Magi (also called wise men) arrived in Jerusalem during Herod's reign, having observed an unusual star in the east that signaled the birth of the King of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-2). Their arrival troubled Herod and all Jerusalem, prompting the chief priests and scribes to confirm that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:3-6). Herod deceptively asked the Magi to locate Jesus so he could worship Him, but after finding the child and presenting costly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod (Matthew 2:7-12).
