Overview
Lobbying refers to organized attempts to influence rulers and authorities toward particular ends. While political involvement itself is not inherently wrong, Scripture cautions against using deceptive or obstructive tactics to hinder God's work or advance selfish ambitions. The principle extends beyond ancient times to any coordinated effort to block what God desires.
Key Scriptures
"Then the peoples of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build" (Ezra 4:4, ESV). "And they hired counselors against them to frustrate their purpose all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia" (Ezra 4:5, ESV). "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness" (1 Timothy 2:1-2, NIV).
Application
Rather than employing pressure tactics, Christians should intercede in prayer and advocate transparently while trusting God to accomplish His purposes through legitimate means.
