Overview
Laish was a prosperous, isolated city in northern Canaan that the tribe of Dan conquered and renamed Dan (Judges 18). The Danites, dissatisfied with their allotted territory, sought a larger inheritance and attacked the unsuspecting city. They established idolatrous worship there, setting up a carved image that corrupted generations of Israelites.

"The Danites set up the carved image, and Jonathan the son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land" (Judges 18:30, ESV).
"In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes" (Judges 17:6, ESV).

Application
When we disregard God's provision and pursue our own desires, we risk leading ourselves and others into spiritual compromise and idolatry.
