Extravagance

Extravagance is the excessive and wasteful spending that contradicts biblical principles of stewardship and generosity toward others. Scripture consistently warns against self-indulgent consumption and calls believers to live with restraint and purpose.

Overview

The Bible addresses extravagance as a misuse of God's resources entrusted to our care. Rather than indulging in excessive luxury, Christians are called to practice wise stewardship, remembering that all possessions belong to God and should reflect His values of compassion and justice.

Key Scriptures

"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." (Matthew 6:24, NIV)

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" (Hebrews 13:5, NIV)

"If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction." (1 Timothy 6:8-9, NIV)

Application

Evaluate your spending habits to ensure resources are used for glorifying God and serving others rather than satisfying selfish desires.
