Overview
Eli served as priest and judge in Israel during the time of Samuel's birth. Though he showed kindness to Hannah and received God's word through young Samuel, Eli failed in his fundamental duty to restrain his sons Hophni and Phinehas from their corrupt practices and abuse of their priestly office. His weakness as a father resulted in devastating judgment upon his entire family.

"Why do you honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering that my people Israel bring to me?" (1 Samuel 2:29, NIV). "His sons, however, did not listen to their father's rebuke" (1 Samuel 2:25, NIV). When Eli heard the ark of God had been captured and his sons killed, "Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man and heavy" (1 Samuel 4:18, NIV).
Application
Christian parents and leaders must actively address sin in those under their care rather than passively tolerating wrongdoing, remembering that God holds us accountable for spiritual oversight.
