Baruch son of Neriah was from a prominent Judean family (his brother Seraiah served King Zedekiah). He served as Jeremiah's secretary, writing the first scroll of prophecies. When King Jehoiakim burned the scroll, Baruch rewrote it at Jeremiah's dictation with additional judgments. Baruch was accused of inciting Jeremiah and was forced into hiding. God personally promised Baruch that his life would be spared as "prey" during the fall of Jerusalem. Later, he was taken with Jeremiah to Egypt against his will.
