Ahithophel’s counsel was regarded as if one had “inquired at the oracle of God.” When Absalom rebelled, Ahithophel switched allegiance. He gave clever advice: first, that Absalom should sleep with David’s concubines in public to cement the rebellion, and second, that he be allowed to lead a force to hunt down David immediately. David prayed that God would “turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” When his second (better) advice was rejected for Hushai’s, Ahithophel knew the rebellion would fail, went home, set his house in order, and hanged himself.
