Scripture consistently demonstrates God's special concern for the aged and His expectation that His people will honor them. Leviticus 19:32 commands, "Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD." This is particularly important in our youth-obsessed culture that often dismisses the elderly as irrelevant. As believers, we're called to counter-cultural living that values people not for their productivity but for their inherent worth as image-bearers of God.
The aged also have ongoing purposes in God's kingdom. They can mentor younger believers, pray with the perspective that comes from seeing God's faithfulness over decades, and model how to finish life well. Rather than being sidelined, the elderly should be treasured repositories of faith, wisdom, and experience that enrich the entire community of faith.
