Asriel

Asriel was a son of Manasseh whose descendants received a significant inheritance in the Transjordan region during Israel's settlement of Canaan.

Who Was Asriel?

Asriel appears in Scripture as a son of Manasseh, one of Joseph's two sons who received the blessing of the firstborn in Israel (Numbers 26:31). His lineage is recorded in the genealogical accounts that trace the tribes of Israel during their wilderness journey and settlement in Canaan. While Asriel himself is not featured prominently in narrative accounts, his descendants—the Asrielites—became an important family within the tribe of Manasseh, and their inheritance reflects God's faithful distribution of the Promised Land among His people.

The mention of Asriel in Numbers 26 occurs during the second census of Israel, taken in the plains of Moab after the plague that followed the Israelites' unfaithfulness at Peor. This census determined how the land would be divided among the tribes. The Asrielites are listed among the families of Manasseh, indicating their established place within the tribal structure and their readiness to receive their portion of the inheritance that God had promised to Abraham centuries earlier.

Asriel's Inheritance and Legacy

The descendants of Asriel received their inheritance in the half-tribe of Manasseh that settled east of the Jordan River, in the region known as Gilead. This territory, while outside the traditional borders of Canaan proper, was granted to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh because it was suitable for their livestock (Numbers 32). The Asrielites' portion within this region represented their stake in God's covenant promise, even though it differed from the inheritance of their kinsmen who settled west of the Jordan.

Joshua 17 provides additional details about Manasseh's inheritance, including the portion assigned to the descendants of Asriel. The careful documentation of these tribal divisions demonstrates that God's promises were fulfilled with precision and care. Each family, including the Asrielites, received specific boundaries and allotments, showing that the Lord's covenant was not merely spiritual but also materially and geographically tangible for His people.

What This Means for Us Today

Though Asriel lived in ancient times, his story reminds us of important biblical truths. First, it demonstrates that God keeps His promises with exactness and fairness. The careful census-taking and land division show a God who remembers every family, every name, and every person. In our own lives, we can trust that the God who cared for the Asrielites cares deeply for each of us and remembers our circumstances.

Second, Asriel's legacy teaches us about inheritance. Just as the Asrielites received a physical inheritance in the land God promised, we as believers have received an even greater spiritual inheritance through Christ. We are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17), and our inheritance is "imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you" (1 Peter 1:4). May we live with grateful hearts, remembering that we too have been claimed by God and given a place in His eternal kingdom.

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. (2 Corinthians 5:1)
