Apollyon

Apollyon is the Greek name for the angel of the bottomless pit, representing Satan's destructive power, and appears primarily in Revelation's apocalyptic vision of end-times judgment.

Identity and Scriptural References

The name Apollyon appears only once in Scripture, in Revelation 9:11, where John describes a terrifying vision of judgment during the tribulation. The Greek word "Apollyon" literally means "destroyer," derived from the verb "apollumi" (to destroy or ruin). In this same passage, John provides the Hebrew equivalent: Abaddon, which carries the same meaning. Both names emphasize the destructive nature of this angelic being who rules over the abyss—the prison of demons and spiritual darkness.

The context of Apollyon's appearance is crucial to understanding his role. In Revelation 9, after the fifth trumpet sounds, John witnesses the opening of the bottomless pit, from which smoke rises and locusts emerge with extraordinary power. These are not ordinary insects but demonic forces, and they have "a king over them, the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he has the name Apollyon" (Revelation 9:11). This figure commands these destructive entities, emphasizing Satan's hierarchical control over demonic forces and his ultimate goal of destruction and spiritual ruin.

Many biblical scholars understand Apollyon as either Satan himself or one of Satan's chief lieutenants—a powerful fallen angel granted authority over the abyss. The designation "angel of the bottomless pit" reflects the spiritual reality that even demons operate under divine permission and restraint, unable to act beyond what God allows in His sovereign plan.

Significance in Prophecy and Spiritual Warfare

Understanding Apollyon reminds us that destruction and chaos have a spiritual source. Throughout Scripture, we see Satan described as "the father of lies" (John 8:44) and as one who "comes only to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). Apollyon's role in Revelation demonstrates that Satan's agenda, from Genesis to Revelation, remains constant: to destroy what God has created, to corrupt what God has blessed, and to deceive those made in God's image.

The apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 6:12 that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Apollyon represents these dark spiritual forces. Yet Paul reminds us that believers are not helpless victims. Through Christ, we have authority over these powers. Jesus declared in Luke 10:19, "I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy."

Application for Today's Believer

For Canadian believers navigating a increasingly secularized culture, recognizing Apollyon's reality helps us understand spiritual opposition. We face destructive ideologies, broken relationships, addictions, and despair—all tools of the destroyer. Yet our confidence rests not in fearing Apollyon's power, but in Christ's victory. Jesus has already defeated Satan and all his forces through His resurrection (Colossians 2:15).

Let us stand firm in Christ, put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), and remember that "the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world" (1 John 4:4). Our response to spiritual destruction is not anxiety, but faith, prayer, and active obedience to Christ.

"And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit... and he had a name written, Apollyon" (Revelation 9:1, 11 KJV).
