A City of Ministry and Service
Anem appears in the biblical record as one of the cities designated for the Levites, specifically assigned to the Gershonite families who served in the tabernacle and later the temple. First Chronicles 6:73 lists Anem among the cities given to the sons of Gershon from the tribe of Issachar. This allocation was part of God's careful provision for those who dedicated their lives to serving Him and ministering to His people.
The Gershonites had specific responsibilities in caring for the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and hangings. By providing them with cities like Anem, God ensured that His servants had places to live and raise their families while fulfilling their sacred duties. This demonstrates God's practical care for those who serve Him—He provides not just spiritual purpose, but also material needs and community.
God's Provision for His Servants
The establishment of Levitical cities like Anem reveals an important biblical principle: God provides for those who dedicate themselves to His service. The Levites received no tribal inheritance like the other tribes of Israel, yet God ensured they were well cared for through the tithe system and designated cities. This arrangement shows God's faithfulness to those who put His kingdom work first in their lives.
Anem's location in Issachar's territory also highlights how God distributed His servants throughout Israel. Rather than concentrating all the Levites in one area, He scattered them among the tribes so that every region would have access to spiritual leadership and teaching. This wise distribution ensured that all of God's people could benefit from the ministry and guidance of those specially called to serve.
Lessons for Modern Ministry
While we may not have Levitical cities today, the principles behind Anem's designation remain relevant for modern believers. God still calls people to full-time ministry, and He expects His people to support those who serve faithfully. Churches have a responsibility to provide for their pastors, missionaries, and ministry workers, just as Israel provided cities for the Levites. This support enables God's servants to focus on their calling without undue worry about basic needs.
Additionally, Anem reminds us that ministry should be distributed throughout our communities rather than confined to church buildings. Just as the Levites lived among the tribes, modern believers are called to be salt and light in their neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools. We all have a role in extending God's kingdom wherever He has placed us.
And to the sons of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the other half tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Beeshterah with her suburbs; two cities.
