Who Were the Anakim?
The Anakim were descendants of Anak, a race of giants who inhabited the land of Canaan when the Israelites arrived. Numbers 13:33 describes them from the perspective of the fearful spies: "We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." These were people of extraordinary size and strength who struck terror into the hearts of those who encountered them.
The Anakim were not merely tall people but were considered formidable warriors who controlled key territories in the Promised Land. Deuteronomy 9:2 acknowledges their reputation: "The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: 'Who can stand up against the Anakites?'" Their presence in Canaan represented one of the greatest challenges facing God's people as they prepared to claim their inheritance.
The Challenge of Faith
The Anakim became a test of faith for the Israelites. When the twelve spies returned from scouting the Promised Land, ten of them focused on the giants rather than God's promises. Their fear of the Anakim led to widespread panic and ultimately cost an entire generation the opportunity to enter the land. This teaches us that when we focus on our obstacles rather than on God's power, we can miss His blessings.
However, Caleb demonstrated a different perspective. Joshua 14:12 records his bold declaration: "Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said." At age 85, Caleb was ready to face the giants because his faith was in God's promises, not his own strength.
Victory Through God's Power
The ultimate defeat of the Anakim demonstrates that no obstacle is too great when God fights for His people. Joshua 11:21-22 records their destruction: "At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites from the hill country... No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod did any survive." What seemed impossible to the fearful spies became reality through faith and obedience.
For believers today, the Anakim represent those overwhelming challenges that make us feel like "grasshoppers"—serious illness, financial crises, broken relationships, or persistent sins. Like Caleb, we can face our giants with confidence, knowing that God's promises are greater than any obstacle. The key is keeping our eyes on God's faithfulness rather than the size of our problems.
