Overview
Jesus declared, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me" (Matthew 28:18 BSB). Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated His absolute power over the natural world by commanding wind and waves, multiplying food, walking on water, and controlling disease and death itself. These miracles were not mere displays of supernatural power, but divine acts that revealed the identity of the Son of God and authenticated His message of salvation. His authority over nature demonstrated that He was fully God, Lord of creation, and worthy of the faith and obedience of all people.
Biblical Account
The Gospel accounts record numerous instances where Jesus exercised dominion over natural forces. When a fierce storm threatened His disciples on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus rebuked the wind and waves, bringing immediate calm: "Peace, be still" (Mark 4:39 BSB). The disciples responded with awe and reverence, asking, "Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey Him!" (Mark 4:41 BSB). In another account, Jesus walked across the water toward His terrified disciples, demonstrating authority over a natural law that would have seemed impossible to overcome. When Peter asked to join Him, Jesus enabled him to walk on water as well, though Peter's faith wavered and he began to sink.
Jesus also demonstrated authority over physical resources and life itself. He multiplied loaves and fishes to feed thousands of hungry people, transforming a meager supply into abundance that satisfied all who were present. He turned water into wine at Cana, commanding the physical properties of matter itself. When He touched a leper, the disease vanished instantly: "Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed" (Luke 5:13 BSB). His ultimate display of authority came when He raised Lazarus from the dead with the simple command, "Lazarus, come out!" (John 11:43 BSB). These miracles were performed with complete authority and required no lengthy ritual or prayer; Christ's word alone was sufficient.
Theological Significance
Jesus' authority over nature reveals His divine nature and His role as the Son of God. In the Old Testament, only God possessed the power to command creation and demand obedience from all natural forces. By exercising this same authority, Jesus claimed deity and demonstrated that He is God incarnate. His miracles over nature were signs pointing to His identity and authenticating His teachings about the kingdom of God.
These miracles also display Christ's compassion and His willingness to use His power for the benefit of others. Jesus did not use His authority to display pride or gain earthly power; instead, He used it to help the helpless, feed the hungry, and comfort the afraid. The Psalmist wrote, "He rules by His might forever" (Psalm 66:7 BSB), yet Christ wielded this power with gentleness and mercy toward those who believed in Him.
