Overview
"Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name." — John 20:30-31 BSB
The Gospel of John presents seven distinct miracles, called "signs," that reveal the identity and power of Jesus Christ. Unlike the other gospels that record numerous miracles, John deliberately selects seven specific miracles to demonstrate that Jesus is the Son of God and the source of eternal life. These signs are not random displays of power but carefully chosen revelations of Christ's divine nature and purpose. Each sign builds upon the previous one, creating a theological argument that culminates in the resurrection of Lazarus and ultimately points to Christ's own resurrection and the offer of eternal life to all who believe.
Biblical Account
John's Gospel opens with the first sign at Cana, where Jesus transforms water into wine. "Jesus said to the servants, 'Fill the jars with water.' So they filled them to the brim. Then He said to them, 'Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.' The second sign involves the healing of a royal official's son: "Jesus said to him, 'Go; your son will live.' The man took Jesus at His word and departed. The third sign occurs at the Pool of Bethesda, where Jesus heals a man who had been ill for thirty-eight years. "Then Jesus said to him, 'Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.' The fourth sign is the feeding of the five thousand, recorded in John 6, where Jesus multiplies five loaves and two fish to feed a massive crowd. Finally, the seventh and greatest sign is the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb.

These seven signs reveal Jesus as the source of life, sustenance, wholeness, and resurrection power.
