Swan

The swan is listed among the unclean birds in the Mosaic law, prohibited for consumption by God's people. This classification reflects God's design for distinguishing between clean and unclean animals under the Old Covenant.

Overview

In the Mosaic law, God provided specific dietary regulations to set apart His people and teach them obedience. The swan, along with other water birds, was designated as ceremonially unclean and therefore forbidden as food for Israelites. This distinction served as a practical reminder of God's sovereignty over creation and His call to holiness.

Key Scriptures

"And these you shall regard as unclean among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard, the kite, the falcon in its kind, every raven in its kind, the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk in its kind, the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, the white owl, the pelican, the carrion vulture, the stork, the heron in its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat." (Leviticus 11:13-19, ESV). See also Deuteronomy 14:12-18.

Application

While these ceremonial laws no longer apply to New Covenant believers, they remind us that God calls us to live distinctly and obediently according to His Word.
