Suing

Scripture discourages believers from suing one another in secular courts, instead calling us to resolve disputes through the church and to suffer wrong rather than damage our witness. Jesus teaches that we should be willing to lose material possessions rather than stand up for our rights in court.

Overview

The New Testament addresses the practice of suing with concern for both Christian unity and testimony. Believers are called to seek reconciliation and justice through the church rather than secular courts, and to prioritize relationships and Christ's reputation over personal vindication or financial recovery.

Key Scriptures

"If anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well" (Matthew 5:40, ESV). "If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord's people?" (1 Corinthians 6:1, NIV). "The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?" (1 Corinthians 6:7, NIV).

Application

When faced with disputes, Christians should first seek resolution through prayer, direct conversation, and church mediation rather than pursuing litigation, recognizing that our witness to Christ's love matters more than winning a case.
