Overview
The suburbs (or open lands) mentioned in Scripture were designated buffer zones surrounding Levitical cities. These areas provided essential space for cattle, flocks, and crops to sustain the Levites who were set apart for priestly service and had no territorial inheritance like other tribes.
Key Scriptures
"And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about" (Numbers 35:4, KJV). "And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the midst" (Numbers 35:5, KJV). "But the Levites shall not have any part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance" (Joshua 14:4, NASB).
