Overview
Stocks were wooden or metal devices used to restrain and punish offenders in ancient biblical culture. They confined the feet, hands, or neck of prisoners, often as a form of public humiliation and judicial penalty. Scripture records their use both as instruments of oppression and as means through which God demonstrated His faithfulness to His people.
Key Scriptures
"Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths" (Job 13:27, KJV). "He also putteth my feet in the stocks, and looketh narrowly unto all my paths" (Job 33:11, KJV). "For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, A young man void of understanding... Till an arrow struck through his liver; As a bird hasteth to the snare, And knew not that it is for his life" (Proverbs 7:6-7, noting context of entrapment). "And Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord" (Jeremiah 20:2, KJV). "And the keeper of the prison... put them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks" (Acts 16:24, KJV).
Application
When facing unjust restraint or suffering, trust that God sees your affliction and remains sovereign over your circumstances, as He was with Jeremiah and Paul.
