Simony

Simony is the sin of attempting to buy or sell spiritual gifts or ecclesiastical offices, named after Simon the sorcerer who tried to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit from the apostles.

Overview

Simony represents a fundamental corruption of spiritual authority and God's grace. It occurs when someone attempts to acquire spiritual power, office, or gifts through monetary payment or worldly exchange. This sin reveals a grievous misunderstanding of the nature of God's kingdom and the Holy Spirit's work.

Key Scriptures

"Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, saying, 'Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.'" (Acts 8:18-19, ESV)

Peter's response: "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!" (Acts 8:20, ESV)

Application

Guard against seeking spiritual influence through worldly means; recognize that God's gifts are freely given by grace, never purchased, and remain alert to spiritual corruption disguised as religious advancement.
