The Sanctity of Life from Conception
The Bible establishes that human life begins at conception and is sacred to God. Psalm 139:13-16 beautifully describes how God forms us in the womb: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb... your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." This passage reveals that God is actively involved in the development of every child from the moment of conception, knowing and planning each life before birth.
Similarly, Jeremiah 1:5 records God's words: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart." This demonstrates that God sees unborn children as complete persons with divine purpose and calling. The Hebrew word "yatsar" (formed) is the same word used for God's creation of Adam, emphasizing the sacred nature of life's beginning.
Biblical Principles of Justice and Protection
Scripture consistently calls God's people to defend the vulnerable and innocent. Psalm 82:3-4 commands us to "Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked." The unborn represent the most vulnerable members of our society, unable to speak for themselves.
Proverbs 24:11-12 provides a sobering challenge: "Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, 'But we knew nothing about this,' does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?" This passage calls believers to action when innocent lives are threatened, reminding us that God sees our response to injustice.
A Gospel Response of Grace and Hope
While Scripture clearly values unborn life, the gospel offers hope and healing for all who have been touched by abortion. God's forgiveness through Christ extends to every sin, including decisions made in fear or desperation. The church must be a place of grace, supporting women facing difficult pregnancies and offering practical help alongside biblical truth.
Our calling is to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves while extending Christ's love to all. This means advocating for policies that protect life, supporting pregnancy resource centers, and creating communities where families can thrive. We must combine unwavering commitment to life with genuine compassion for those facing difficult circumstances.
