Shunammite

The Shunammite woman was a wealthy, hospitable resident of Shunem who showed extraordinary kindness to the prophet Elisha, providing him with food and lodging. As a result of her generosity and faith, God granted her a son and later restored him to life.

Overview

The Shunammite woman demonstrated remarkable faith and generosity by recognizing Elisha as a man of God and providing him with a room in her home (2 Kings 4:8-10). Though childless and married to an older man, she received the promise of a son through Elisha's intercession. When her son later died, she trusted God's prophet to restore his life, displaying deep faith in God's power and goodness.

Key Scriptures

"One day Elisha went to Shunem, where a well-to-do woman lived. She urged him to stay for a meal" (2 Kings 4:8, NIV). "She said to her husband, 'I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God'" (2 Kings 4:9, NIV). "So she said, 'About this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms.' 'No, my lord,' she said. 'Don't mislead your servant, O man of God!'" (2 Kings 4:16, NIV).

Application

Hospitality and recognition of God's servants open doors to blessing; generous faith in difficult circumstances honors both God and His messengers.
