Shobach

Shobach was the commander of the Syrian forces under Hadadezer who was defeated by King David's army. His death marked a significant military victory that prevented a coalition against Israel.

Overview

Shobach served as the military commander of the Syrian army under King Hadadezer of Zobah. When the Ammonites hired Syrian mercenaries to fight against Israel, Shobach led these forces but was decisively defeated by David's army at the Jordan River. His death effectively ended Syrian interference in the conflict and solidified David's regional dominance.

Key Scriptures

"When the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. And Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer went up and drew up the Syrians in battle array against David" (2 Samuel 10:15-16, ESV).

"And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 700 chariots and 40,000 horsemen, and put to death also Shobach the commander of their army" (2 Samuel 10:18, ESV).

Application

Shobach's defeat reminds believers that God grants victory to those who trust in Him, and that opposing His purposes ultimately leads to defeat.
