Shimeon

Shimeon was one of the sons of Bani who divorced his foreign wife during Ezra's reform in post-exilic Jerusalem.

Overview

Shimeon appears in the biblical record during the restoration period after the Babylonian exile. He was among the Israelite men who had married foreign women and was called to separate from these marriages as part of Ezra's religious reform to maintain covenant faithfulness and spiritual purity among God's people.

Key Scriptures

"And of the sons of Bani: Maaseiah, Matteniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh" (Ezra 10:30, ESV). "And of the sons of Bani: Shelomith, and Amariah, and Joseph. Of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, and Joel, and Benaiah" (Ezra 10:38, ESV). "These all had taken foreign wives, and some of the women had borne children" (Ezra 10:44, ESV).

Application

Shimeon's account reminds us that obedience to God's Word sometimes requires difficult personal sacrifice, and that spiritual leaders must address compromise in the faith community.
