Sheth

Sheth is a biblical name appearing in genealogical and prophetic contexts, most notably in Balaam's prophecy regarding the future Messiah.

Overview

Sheth (also spelled Seth) refers to a descendant in the line of Adam and Eve, but in the context of Numbers 24:17, it appears to reference the nation of Israel. Balaam's prophecy uses "Sheth" poetically to describe Israel, the people through whom God's redemptive plan would unfold. This prophecy ultimately points to the coming of Christ as Israel's ultimate King.

Key Scriptures

"I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth." (Numbers 24:17, ESV)

"Seth also had a son, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD." (Genesis 4:26, ESV)

Application

Recognize how God's redemptive history flows through appointed lineages, ultimately culminating in Christ's kingship over all nations.
