Overview
Civil authorities, including sheriffs and magistrates, are established by God to maintain order and administer justice. The Bible recognizes their role as essential to organized society and calls citizens to respect these officials while they fulfill their God-given responsibilities.
Key Scriptures
In Daniel 3:2-3 (ESV), King Nebuchadnezzar's administration included various officials: "And the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces were assembled for the dedication of the image."
Romans 13:4 (ESV) states: "For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer."
