Overview
Shemeber was one of five kings of the plain who allied together against Kedorlaomer and his confederation of invading kings around the time of Abraham. His kingdom of Zeboim was located in the Jordan valley region. Though his name appears only briefly in Genesis, it provides historical context for understanding the political landscape of Canaan in the patriarchal era.
Key Scriptures
"Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out, and they joined battle in the Valley of Siddim" (Genesis 14:8, ESV). "In the fourteenth year Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim" (Genesis 14:5, ESV).
Application
Remember that even obscure biblical names represent real people and kingdoms whose brief mention confirms Scripture's historical reliability and the sovereignty of God over all nations.
