Overview
The Shelanites were members of a family clan within the tribe of Judah, tracing their lineage back to Shelah, the son of Judah and a Canaanite woman (Genesis 38:5). They appear in the census data recorded during Israel's wilderness wanderings and later during the period of settlement in Canaan, representing one of the organized divisions of Judah's descendants.
Key Scriptures
"The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan); and the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul" (1 Chronicles 2:3, ESV).
"The sons of Judah by their clans: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites" (Numbers 26:20, ESV).
"And of the Judahites: Uthai the son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, from the sons of Perez the son of Judah" (1 Chronicles 9:4, ESV).
Application
Understanding tribal genealogies reminds us that God's covenant people were organized and known to Him by name and family line throughout history.
