Sheep Market of Jerusalem

The Sheep Market of Jerusalem was a commercial area near the Pool of Bethesda where sheep were sold for temple sacrifices. It serves as a backdrop for Jesus's healing miracle and His cleansing of the temple.

Overview

The Sheep Market (also called the Sheep Gate) was located in Jerusalem near the Pool of Bethesda on the north side of the temple. This marketplace was integral to temple worship, as sheep were essential sacrificial animals. The area represented both legitimate religious commerce and the commercialization that sometimes obscured true worship.

Key Scriptures

"Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porticoes." (John 5:2, NASB)

Jesus later cleansed the temple, saying: "And He said to them, 'It is written, "My house shall be called a house of prayer"; but you are making it a robbers' den.'" (Matthew 21:13, NASB)

Application

We must examine whether our religious practices and communities prioritize genuine worship of God or have become distracted by commercialism and cultural traditions that obscure authentic faith.
