Sheal

Shealtiel (also spelled Sheal) was a post-exile Israelite who put away his foreign wife in obedience to Ezra's call for spiritual purification. His name appears among those who responded to the command to separate from foreign marriages that violated God's covenant.

Overview

Sheal was one of the sons of Bani who lived during the post-exile period under Ezra's leadership. When Ezra discovered that many Israelites had married foreign women, he called the people to repentance and obedience to God's law. Sheal was among those who responded by putting away their foreign wives, demonstrating commitment to covenant faithfulness and separation from pagan influences.

Key Scriptures

"Now Sheal and Jeremias, and Ozias, and Jeremiel, and Abadias, and Jezelus, and Asom" (Ezra 10:29, Douay-Rheims reference). This passage lists those who took action to restore spiritual purity to the community after the exile.

Application

Sheal's example challenges believers today to prioritize spiritual faithfulness and obedience to God's Word, even when it requires difficult personal decisions, recognizing that covenant loyalty and separation from worldly influences strengthens the church.
