Overview
Sceva appears in Acts 19 during Paul's ministry in Ephesus. His seven sons were exorcists who attempted to use the name of Jesus to expel demons from a possessed man. However, lacking true faith in Christ, they were overpowered by the demon-possessed man, who attacked them violently, leaving them wounded and fleeing in shame. This incident became widely known throughout Ephesus and served as a powerful testimony to Christ's authority.
Key Scriptures
"Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.'" (Acts 19:13, ESV)
"And the evil spirit answered them, 'Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?'" (Acts 19:15, ESV)
"And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded." (Acts 19:16, ESV)
Application
True spiritual authority comes only through genuine faith in Jesus Christ; attempting to use His name without authentic belief proves powerless and dangerous.
