Overview
In biblical times, a towel was an ordinary household item, but Jesus transformed its significance by using one during an act of humble service. When Jesus wrapped a towel around His waist and washed the disciples' feet, He modeled the kind of servant attitude He calls all believers to embrace, regardless of social status or position.
Key Scriptures
"He rose from supper and laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel" (John 13:4, NASB). "Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded" (John 13:5, NASB). Jesus later explained: "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you" (John 13:14-15, NASB).
Application
Believers are called to adopt a servant's heart in their relationships, willingly performing humble acts of care and love for others as Christ did.
