Overview
During the return from exile under Zerubbabel, certain families could not establish their genealogical records to prove Israelite descent. Tobiah was among those whose ancestry could not be verified, and consequently they were excluded from serving as priests until their lineage could be confirmed by the Urim and Thummim.
Key Scriptures
"The following were those who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but they could not show that their fathers' houses and their descent were of Israel: the descendants of Delaiah, the descendants of Tobiah, the descendants of Nekoda, 652" (Ezra 2:59-60, ESV).
"And from the priests: the descendants of Habaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai (who had taken a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name). These sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies, but it was not found there, so they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean" (Nehemiah 7:63-64, ESV).
Application
Believers should maintain clear accountability in their spiritual identity and walk with Christ, ensuring their faith is grounded in genuine conversion rather than mere cultural or family heritage.
