Tob

Tob refers to a region east of the Jordan River where unemployed or discontented men gathered, notably serving as a refuge for Jephthah and later as a staging ground for Ammonite forces.

Overview

Tob was a territory in the Transjordan region that served as a gathering place for marginalized individuals and military forces. It appears in the context of regional conflicts during the judges and early monarchy periods, representing both a place of refuge and a staging area for military operations.

Key Scriptures

"Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob" (Judges 11:3, ESV). "So the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob" (Judges 11:5, ESV). "The Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob with twelve thousand men" (2 Samuel 10:6, ESV).

Application

We should recognize that God can use people from unexpected backgrounds and circumstances to accomplish His purposes, as He did with Jephthah, reminding us that our past does not disqualify us from God's call.
