Tile

Tiles in Scripture refer to baked clay or stone used in construction and artistic purposes, appearing in both literal building contexts and symbolic prophetic actions.

Overview

Tiles served practical purposes in ancient Near Eastern construction, providing durable roofing and flooring materials. They also featured prominently in prophetic symbolism, where God instructed His prophets to use them in enacted messages to communicate His judgment and purposes to His people.

Key Scriptures

"Now you, son of man, take a brick and lay it before you, and portray on it a city, Jerusalem" (Ezekiel 4:1, ESV). This refers to the clay brick/tile upon which Ezekiel was to sketch Jerusalem as part of his prophetic demonstration of siege.

"When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus" (Luke 5:19, NIV). Here tiles composed the roof of the house where Jesus taught, which the determined friends removed to access Him.

Application

Consider how God uses ordinary, tangible materials and creative methods to communicate His truth—encouraging us to be ingenious and persistent in sharing the Gospel with others.
