Veneration

Veneration in Scripture refers to showing deep respect and honor to God and His representatives, distinct from worship which belongs to God alone. The Bible prohibits the veneration of created things while affirming honor toward God's appointed leaders and figures.

Overview

Biblical veneration involves showing reverence and respect to those whom God has placed in positions of authority or whom He has blessed. This differs fundamentally from worship, which is reserved for God alone. The practice reflects proper ordering of relationships and acknowledgment of God's work through His servants.

Key Scriptures

"And Israel bowed himself upon the head of his bed. Then Joseph took both of them, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near him" (Genesis 48:15-16, ESV).

Jacob bowed in reverence before God, demonstrating proper veneration through physical posture and spiritual acknowledgment of the Lord's sovereignty over his life and descendants.

Application

Believers should honor God-given authority and recognize His work in others' lives while maintaining clear distinction between reverence for people and worship belonging only to God.
