Zophim

Zophim was a high place or field in ancient Israel where the prophet Balaam was taken by Balak to pronounce curses against Israel. It served as a vantage point overlooking the Israelite camp during their wilderness journey.

Overview

Zophim was a location on the top of Pisgah in Moab where King Balak brought the prophet Balaam to curse the nation of Israel. From this elevated position, Balak hoped Balaam could pronounce effective curses against Israel as they camped in the plains of Moab during their wilderness journey toward Canaan.

Key Scriptures

"So Balak took Balaam to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar" (Numbers 23:14, ESV).

The reference in 1 Samuel 1:1 mentions Zophim as a region associated with Ramah in the hill country of Ephraim, indicating the name was used in multiple locations in Israel's geography.

Application

Zophim reminds believers that God's protection over His people cannot be thwarted by human schemes or spiritual opposition, as Balaam was prevented from cursing Israel despite repeated attempts.
