Ziba

Ziba was the servant of Saul's house who became steward over Mephibosheth's estate and later accused him of disloyalty to King David. His actions reveal how servants can manipulate circumstances for personal gain.

Overview

Ziba served in Saul's household and was placed by David as steward over Mephibosheth's lands and servants. When David fled Jerusalem during Absalom's rebellion, Ziba brought provisions to the king and made accusations against Mephibosheth, suggesting he remained in Jerusalem to reclaim the throne. David rewarded Ziba with all of Mephibosheth's property, though the matter was later complicated when Mephibosheth's own explanation contradicted Ziba's account.

Key Scriptures

"Now when David had gone a little way beyond the summit, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him with a couple of saddled donkeys bearing two hundred loaves of bread" (2 Samuel 16:1, ESV).

Ziba claimed: "Mephibosheth has remained in Jerusalem, for he said, 'Today the house of Israel will give me back the kingdom of my father'" (2 Samuel 16:3, ESV).

Later, Mephibosheth protested: "Why do you speak of these things? I have decided: you and Ziba shall divide the land" (2 Samuel 19:29, ESV).

Application

Believers should be cautious of self-serving accusations and verify claims before making decisions that affect others' welfare.
