Overview
Zephath was a Canaanite city in the southern part of Canaan that fell to the Israelites under Judah's leadership during the conquest. The city was completely devoted to the Lord through destruction, a practice known as herem or the ban, which demonstrated radical obedience to God's commands regarding the conquest.
Key Scriptures
"And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called Hormah" (Judges 1:17, ESV).
"So they went up and searched the land from the Wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, near the entrance of Hamath" (Numbers 13:21, NASB)—providing geographical context for understanding Canaan's cities.
Application
Zephath reminds us that obedience to God's specific commands, though difficult to understand by modern standards, was central to Israel's covenant relationship and demonstrates the seriousness with which God took His promises regarding the land.
