Overview
Zareah (also spelled Zarea or Zarephath in some contexts) was a settlement in Benjamin's tribal territory during the post-exilic period. The town is mentioned in Nehemiah's record of cities repopulated by returning Jewish exiles, reflecting the restoration of Judah after the Babylonian captivity. Little is known about Zareah beyond its geographical location and its role in the restoration community.
Key Scriptures
"The people of Israel, the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants lived in their towns, and all the other Israelites lived in their towns" (Nehemiah 11:20, ESV). Specifically, "Zareah, Hadid, and Ono, the valley of the craftsmen" (Nehemiah 11:29, ESV).
Application
God's promise to restore His people after exile reminds us that He remains faithful even through judgment, and His purposes for His people continue across generations.
