Regem-Melech

Regem-Melech was a man who, along with Sharezer, was sent to inquire of the priests and prophets concerning fasting practices during the Babylonian exile.

Overview

Regem-Melech appears in the context of post-exilic Israel, during the time when the Jewish people were seeking guidance on their religious practices. He was sent as a representative, likely from the Jewish community in Babylon, to consult with the religious leaders in Jerusalem about the proper observance of fasts and mourning customs that had been practiced during the exile.

Key Scriptures

"Now the people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melech and their men to entreat the favor of the Lord" (Zechariah 7:2, ESV).

Through this inquiry, God provided instruction through the prophet Zechariah about the true nature of fasting and obedience, emphasizing that external religious practices must be accompanied by genuine repentance and righteousness (Zechariah 7:5-6).

Application

Like Regem-Melech's delegation, believers today should seek wise spiritual counsel and ensure that their religious observances reflect authentic devotion to God rather than mere external compliance.
