Rechab

Rechab was a Benjamite military commander whose sons murdered Saul's son Ish-bosheth, expecting reward from David but receiving execution instead. His account illustrates that evil deeds done for personal gain, even against God's enemies, bring judgment rather than blessing.

Overview

Rechab and his brother Baanah were captains in Ish-bosheth's army. Seeking to gain favor with David after the house of Saul's decline, they assassinated their master and brought his head to David, hoping for a reward. David, however, recognized their treachery and had them executed, making clear that murder for personal advancement—not justice—would not be tolerated in his kingdom.

Key Scriptures

"So Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. And they came to the house of Ish-bosheth as he lay on his bed at noon" (2 Samuel 4:6, ESV).

David said to them, "As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life out of every adversity, when one told me, 'Behold, Saul is dead,' thinking to bring good news, I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, instead of rewarding him for his news. How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?" (2 Samuel 4:9-10, ESV).

Application

Believers must trust God's justice rather than advance themselves through deception or violence, knowing that He ultimately judges all hearts and actions.
