Overview
A potsherd is a fragment of broken pottery or clay vessel. In Scripture, potsherds appear in contexts of affliction and divine sovereignty, reminding us of human frailty and God's supreme authority over His creation. The broken vessel becomes a metaphor for humbled humanity dependent upon God's grace.
Key Scriptures
"So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And Job took a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes." (Job 2:7-8, ESV)
"Woe to him who strives with his Maker, an earthen vessel with the potter! Does the clay say to him who forms it, 'What are you making?' or 'Your work has no handles'?" (Isaiah 45:9, ESV)
Application
When facing suffering or humiliation, remember that God uses broken vessels to display His power and purposes, and submission to His will brings true restoration.
