Plummet

A plummet is a weighted tool used to measure straightness and alignment, appearing in Scripture as a symbol of God's precise judgment and standards. It represents divine assessment of whether people and nations align with God's righteous requirements.

Overview

In biblical imagery, the plummet (also called a plumb line) symbolizes God's exacting standard of righteousness. Just as a builder uses a plummet to ensure a wall is perfectly vertical, God uses this metaphor to demonstrate His careful evaluation of His people's spiritual condition and alignment with His law.

Key Scriptures

"Behold, I have laid in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation: 'Whoever believes will not be in haste.' And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet" (Isaiah 28:16-17, ESV).

"The Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord said to me, 'Amos, what do you see?' And I said, 'A plumb line.' Then the Lord said, 'Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them'" (Amos 7:7-8, ESV).

Application

Allow God's Word to be the standard by which you measure your spiritual growth and obedience, recognizing that He evaluates our hearts with perfect justice.
