Overview
Phaseah (also spelled Paseah) was among the families of the Nethinim—temple servants dedicated to assisting the Levites in temple duties. When the Jewish exiles returned from Babylon under Zerubbabel's leadership around 538 BC, 743 members of various Nethinim families came back to rebuild the temple and restore worship in Jerusalem. Phaseah's inclusion in these genealogical records demonstrates God's faithfulness in preserving His people and enabling their return to serve Him.
Key Scriptures
"The children of Paseah, the children of Besai, the children of Asnah" (Ezra 2:49, NASB). "Moreover the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel: and Ziha and Gispa were over the Nethinims" (Nehemiah 11:21, KJV). "The children of Paseah, seven hundred and forty and five" (Nehemiah 7:51, NASB).
Application
The restoration of temple servants like Phaseah reminds us that God uses ordinary believers in humble roles to accomplish His purposes—we need not hold prominent positions to serve Him faithfully.
