Nergal

Nergal was a pagan deity worshipped by the Sepharvites, representing the false gods that Israel encountered during exile. His worship exemplifies the spiritual dangers of idolatry and abandoning the one true God.

Overview

Nergal was a Mesopotamian god associated with plague, pestilence, and the underworld in ancient Near Eastern religions. The Sepharvites, people from Sepharvaim who were resettled in Samaria by the Assyrian king, brought this false god into the land of Israel. His worship represents the spiritual compromise and idolatry that plagued God's people when they turned from covenant faithfulness.

Key Scriptures

"And the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim." (2 Kings 17:31, ESV)

"But the Lord brought the people of Israel into exile in Assyria, because they had forsaken the Lord their God and had not kept his covenant." (2 Kings 18:11-12, ESV)

Application

Believers today must guard against subtle idolatries and false systems of belief that compete with wholehearted devotion to Christ and His Word.
