Necromancy

Necromancy is the practice of consulting with the dead, explicitly forbidden in Scripture as an abomination to God. The Bible consistently condemns this practice and directs believers to seek guidance from God alone through His Word and Spirit.

Overview

Necromancy involves attempting to communicate with or gain knowledge from the dead through mediums or spiritists. God strictly prohibited this practice in Old Testament law and condemned those who engage in it. The account of King Saul consulting the medium at Endor (1 Samuel 28) serves as a cautionary example of disobedience and its consequences.

Key Scriptures

"There shall not be found among you...a medium or a necromancer, for these are an abomination to the LORD" (Deuteronomy 18:11, ESV). "If someone turns to mediums and spiritists...I will set my face against them" (Leviticus 20:6, NIV). "When they say to you, 'Inquire of the mediums and the spiritists who chirp and mutter'" (Isaiah 8:19, NASB).

Application

Believers should reject any practice involving contact with the dead and instead seek guidance exclusively through prayer, God's Word, and the counsel of mature believers in Christ.
