Overview
Nebo appears in biblical history as a town inhabited by Jewish families returning from Babylonian exile. It also refers to Nabu, a Babylonian deity associated with wisdom and writing, whose worship Isaiah explicitly denounces as futile idolatry.
Key Scriptures
"The people of Nebo, fifty-two" (Ezra 2:29, ESV) returned with Zerubbabel. Isaiah declares: "Bel bows down; Nebo stoops over; their idols are on beasts and livestock" (Isaiah 46:1, ESV), showing how these false gods would fall before God's judgment. Ezra 10:43 mentions Nebo among those who put away foreign wives, demonstrating the struggle of returning exiles to maintain spiritual purity.
Application
Like the returning exiles who had to reject the gods of Babylon, Christians must guard against subtle cultural influences that compete with exclusive devotion to Christ.
