Overview
Migdal-El was one of the fortified cities assigned to the tribe of Naphtali during Joshua's division of the Promised Land. Located in northern Canaan, this settlement served as part of the defensive infrastructure for the region. The city's name, combining 'migdal' (tower) and 'El' (God), reflects the ancient Near Eastern practice of incorporating divine names into place names.
Key Scriptures
"The fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Chinnereth, Adamah, Ramah, Hazor, Kedesh, Edrei, En-hazor, Iron, Migdal-el, Horem, Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh—nineteen cities with their villages." (Joshua 19:35-38, ESV)
This passage lists Migdal-el among the nineteen fortified cities given to Naphtali as their inheritance in the Promised Land.
Application
Migdal-el reminds us that God's provision of land to His people included practical defensive structures, teaching that faithful living involves both spiritual trust and wise preparation for protection.
