Overview
Mehujael (meaning "smitten by God") was the son of Irad and father of Methusael, continuing the line of Cain. He lived in the era before the great flood when human civilization was developing but mankind's sinfulness was increasing. His place in Genesis's genealogy illustrates the progression of human generations from Adam through Cain's line.
Key Scriptures
"Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methusael, and Methusael fathered Lamech" (Genesis 4:18, ESV).
This genealogical record connects the antediluvian world and demonstrates how sin spread through successive generations: "Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned" (Romans 5:12, ESV).
Application
Mehujael's existence reminds believers that all humanity shares a sinful nature inherited through Adam, making Christ's redemptive work essential for salvation.
